The amounts
| Flight distance | Compensation |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km (all of Italy, much of western Europe) | €250 |
| Intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km | €400 |
| Other flights over 3,500 km | €600 |
The amount is per passenger and does not depend on the ticket price. If the airline offers a replacement flight that arrives with only a limited delay, it may cut it by 50%.
When it does not apply
No compensation is due if the airline proves extraordinary circumstances it could not avoid: bad weather, airspace closures, air traffic control or airport strikes, security risks, bird strikes. Ordinary technical faults and strikes by the airline's own staff do not count as extraordinary.
Care while you wait
With a departure delay of at least 2 hours (flights up to 1,500 km) the airline must provide meals and drinks, and a hotel night with transfers if the flight moves to the next day. Keep your receipts.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours of delay give a right to compensation?
You are owed compensation if you reach your final destination 3 hours or more late. What counts is the arrival time, when the aircraft door opens.
Does a strike give a right to compensation?
It depends who is striking. If the airline's own staff strike, compensation is due. Strikes by air traffic controllers or airport staff are extraordinary circumstances: no compensation, but the airline must still look after you and refund or rebook you.
Do I need a claims company?
No. You can claim yourself, free of charge, with the complaint form on the airline's website. Claims companies handle it for you and keep a commission if they win.
